But how can spending money on new windows save you money in the long run?
1. You Can Get Energy Star-Qualified Windows
New Energy Star-qualified windows can cut down on heating and air-conditioning bills. Depending on the quality of your current windows, that amount will vary. Drafty windows can make you run your HVAC a good amount more as the air you’re paying to heat and cool drifts right out from around your leaky old windows. The larger your house is, the more those bills can really add up. Some of the draft might be a result of problems in your home’s insulation, but the windows themselves are responsible for a significant portion of the energy loss. Keeping your warm air inside in the winter, and the cool air inside in the summer, means running your heating and cooling for shorter periods, and that means smaller energy bills.
2. You Can Switch From Single-Paned to Double-Paned
Upgrading from single-paned to double-paned Energy Star-qualified windows can save between $101 and $583 each year, according to this government study by the U.S. Department of Energy. The biggest savings were to be found in the “Northern Zone” at an average of $366 annually – an area that includes New England, the Pacific Northwest, and the northern plains states, as well as most of Ohio.
3. You’ll Get a Federal Tax Credit
All these references to “Energy Star” are talking about the government’s program for evaluating new windows for their efficiency. If you replace your current windows with new ones that meet the Energy Star standards, you can qualify for a tax credit of up to $200. You do not need to replace all of your windows to receive this credit; you can still get a tax credit for whichever windows you replace.
