Roofing and siding companies have been receiving more and more requests for environmentally-friendly siding options. Green siding, or eco-friendly siding, can take a number of forms. And since we’re a roofing company that also does siding work, we are paying close attention and learning everything we can about new techniques and breakthroughs in the field.
Fiber-cement siding costs a bit more to install, but in the long run you can save a lot of money with it. You should not need to replace your fiber-cement siding for 50 years – a great deal longer than we would expect to see with wood or other siding materials.
It is made from a combination of sand, cement, and cellulose fibers. This mix makes fiber-cement much more fire resistant. As a result of these, people in areas that have high fire danger (such as California) can get insurance breaks by using fiber-cement on their homes.
Fiber-cement tends to reduce the need for maintenance calls as well, and this can save money in the long term too.
Aside from using fiber-cement, there are many other ways that we can make your home’s siding more ecologically smart.
- Drainage Planes. Wrapping felt paper or other house wrap under the siding will divert water away from your home, which can help prevent mold, fungus, rot, and water damage.
- Local Materials. Using materials that have not needed to travel long distances will cut down on the amount of fossil fuels burned to prepare for installation.
- Rigid Foam Insulation. Before we install new siding, we can wrap your home in a layer of rigid foam, which will lower your HVAC costs going forward. Smarter insulation will use less energy.
- Trim Options. Many people have used wood for trim and accents, but there are greener options. Brick, stone, stucco, and recycled plastic lumber are all more eco-friendly alternatives.
