Let’s face it: roof replacement is expensive. It is necessary sometimes, sure. But it is in your best interest to extend the life of your roof, however you can.
Do all of these things, and you can prolong the life of your roof.
1. Get Debris Off
Whether it’s leaves, acorns, twigs, or any other kind of natural debris – remove it. You never know how decomposing matter could hurt your shingles.
2. Get the Moss Off
Use a brush and scrub off that moss. It could be growing in between the shingles, and pulling them apart from one another.
3. Get the Ice Off
We’re talking about big chunks of ice here – ice dams. These ice dams can cause roof leaks. You want water to flow off of your roof easily, not get caught up in the standing ice.
4. Replace Injured Shingles
Curling or cracked shingles can lead to the rest of your roof suffering. Hire roofing contractors to swap them out for fresh ones.
5. Improve Your Insulation
This may not seem obvious, but better insulation will keep the airflow going as it should. Great insulation will help an asphalt roof live longer.
6. Get Your Trees Trimmed
You do not want branches hanging over your house. It may look pretty, but a good trim to prevent overhang – or rather, to have branches hanging over your yard, not your structure – will be an act of kindness for your long-suffering roof.
7. Keep Your Gutters Clean
This one is crucial. When sticks and leaves clog up your gutters, that backed-up water can pool up on your roof, and cause tons of damage. Get those gutters cleared out regularly, and don’t make your roof deal with standing water and the damage it incurs.
