Roof Icicles Make Chicago’s New Apple Store Too Treacherous

If you need roof leak repair, and you are in Cincinnati, we are your folks.

If you need to stave off icicles, and you are in Chicago, don’t call the Apple Store.

The roof of the new Chicago Apple Store, a massive flagship store on Michigan Avenue, looks like a MacBook. Apple opened the store along the Riverwalk this past October, when hanging ice was less of an issue.

This week, as Illinois froze over into a lakeside tundra, gnarly icicles took shape along the entrance to the store. Apple had to close to walkway, and post notices of falling ice and slippery surfaces.

Burnham Nationwide consulted Apple and the hired architects on the store’s design. Christopher Chwedyk is one of the Burnham Nationwide consultants who worked on the new store.

“Flat roofs are notorious for this kind of thing, and the overhang for this roof is so far out there’s no heat getting to it,” Chwedyk said. “There was no precedent or prototype for this kind of building, so right now the owners are doing the right thing by putting up signs and cordoning areas off until they can make a change.”

Temperatures in Chicago dipped to 20 below zero already in December!

What a Roofer Does in Cincinnati

Primarily, a roofer specializes in roof construction. From the planning process through the implementation, a roofer understands what makes a roof the most durable. He or she can inspect plans for a new structure, and can make sure that the roofing plans are in accordance with the overall construction strategy. Roofers, in Cincinnati and elsewhere, can also analyze the quality of materials that will be used for the project. Roofing professionals can also work on the specifications for the trusses, rafters, and beams that comprise the structure of the roof. Roofers also deal with the repair and renovation of existing roof structures. This may involve replacing older materials with newer ones. It may call for tearing some of the weakening shingles and building in stronger replacements. It might be part of the job to install new flashing, or to build new gutters. For commercial buildings, roofers often need to put in rubber roof materials, which can be a more complicated process than the one used for most residential roofing jobs.
