Insulation for Roofs and Attics: Why Is It Important?
You probably know that your home’s roof and attic have insulation, but you may not know why they are so important in terms of keeping your home safe and your roof in great shape. When it comes to the most vital ways to protect your roof, you should be thinking of attic insulation, roof insulation and gutters — none of which are actually part of your roof! These structures will help to keep your roof in great shape, though! Gutters keep the water moving off of your roof and away from the walls and structure of your home. Insulation in your attic and under your roof help to protect your roof from sudden and extreme changes in temperature, and help to prevent moisture buildup in the roof’s underlayers which can lead to mold and deterioration of the roofing materials from underneath. The temperature changes on the outside of your house are fine for your roof — it’s built to withstand those. But your roof isn’t meant to get hit from below with air that is significantly colder (in the summer) or significantly warmer (in the winter) than the air above it. Insulation helps to maintain a separation between your home’s interior temperature and the outdoor temperatures your roof is helping to protect you from.
