Just like any other roof, the roof on your porch won’t last forever. 1. Dips
If you see dips in your porch roof, that means water has damaged the roof’s structural integrity. A dip may mean that the wood underneath is rotting, or it could result from something heavy falling on your roof (or people climbing up there). This is never a good sign, but it may not be as catastrophic as it might sound. Having that dip means that the roof has been weakened, though, and any weakness could lead to further water damage, and possibly even a roof collapse. If you see a noticeable dip in your porch roof’s surface, get a local roofing company out to take a look at it.
2. Bulges
Bulges in the porch roof are another sign of deterioration. A bulge indicates that the wood is bloating, or taking on water. This is always a danger with any roof, but particularly one on a porch, which oftentimes is taking on the runoff water from other parts of the roof. Porch roofs also won’t typically have any kind of insulation, and sometimes don’t even have gutters, so they are particularly susceptible to getting water inside of them. Bulges in your porch roof are a definite sign of damage, and you need to address this before your porch roof takes on so much water that it collapses.
3. Damaged shingles
If the shingles on your porch roof are curled or buckled, it could mean that your roof is not properly ventilated. This ventilation should have been put into place when your porch roof was first installed, but it can also degrade over time. If shingles are missing, they could be clogging your gutters, which could create all sorts of other problems as well. Either way, shingle damage is a good indicator that the roof needs attention.
