Solar Roofing From Tesla
But what about the solar roofing that Tesla is working on? Tesla purchased SolarCity earlier this year, and their big move is into the field of solar tiles. Some of these tiles produce solar power, and others are inert tiles that appear just like regular roofing material.
There has been some back-and-forth regarding to proposed costs of such a roof. Tesla posted a solar roof calculator – which takes into account the square footage of your roof, as well as the cost of electricity in your location, and the tax credit you would (or could) receive to offset the cost of installation.
And while the long-term stated goal of Tesla is to have a solar roof cost less than a standard roof outfitted with solar panels, that reality appears to still be a long way off.
Ars Technica magazine calculated such a roof for their senior editor, who lives in Texas.
Even without the $7,000 Powerwall, which Tesla was recommending, the installation was estimated at over $99,000. Given his $180-per-month current electricity bill, the comparison indicates that even over 30 years of amortization, he would not make the money back on his initial installation investment.
