The Roofers and the Homeless Man

Last month, a group of British roofing contractors shared their story about encountering a man who was sleeping on a park bench near their job site.

The young roofing contractors saw the man near the home they were working on, and introduced themselves. He had been living on that park bench in London, barely eating and sleeping. JayJay Murray, one of the roofing company workers, offered the man a cup of tea.

After the tea, they asked the homeless man – who told them his name was John – if he could work with them the next day.

John happily agreed, and showed up at the job site early the next morning, ready to load roofing materials.

He helped them load construction goods all morning. John “worked non-stop,” according to one of the roofers.

The workers chipped in and paid him 70 pounds (currently about $90 in US dollars), after buying him lunch and giving him some fresh clothes.

The man expressed his gratitude for having the work, saying to the roofing contractors before he departed, “Thanks brothers, it’s the most love I’ve ever had.”

It’s the kind of story that reminds us of the redemptive power of purpose. Work helps us focus, and helps gives us the impetus to keep going. As much as we might complain about our daily tasks, there is something to be said for having a job to do, even for a single day.
